CLOUD STILL HANGS OVER HEALTH WORKERS
IN PHILIPPINES
In the Philippines President Aquino has ordered the Department of Justice
to drop charges againstt he so-called 'Morong 43' who were arrested by the army last February
using a faulty warrant.
The 43 health workers were arrested and charged with terrorist offences including being members
of the banned New Peoples army.
Human rights groups in the Philippines say arrest took place because the 43 provided health care
in rural areas to those unable to access private medical care.
UNISON , in a letter to the Ambassador to the UK, voiced its concern.
The recent development is worrying as the president has ordered the charges to be dropped but
has not said the 43 are innocent.
This ambiguous position has allowed the army to continue to detain some of the 43.
